How Agencies Can Attract the Best Recruitment Consultants

How Agencies Can Attract the Best Recruitment Consultants Talented recruitment consultants are hard to come by. The good ones rarely leave because they are heavily incentivised to stay where they are. If they do, then often it is because they want to get out of recruitment and do something totally different. So how do you find them and how can you make your company an attractive proposition? Never stop looking Years ago, I was taught a valuable lesson â€" that good recruitment consultants are like buses. When you don’t need to hire, there are plenty of good consultants on the market and when you do need to hire, there are none. Therefore, don’t stop looking and even change your hiring strategy so you hire talented consultants when they become available and not when you need them. If this isn’t an option, then keep your tentacles in the market and engage with good consultants, meet them and add them to your notebook. If you have enough of these options when you next recruit, then hopefully one or two will still be available. Offer a generous package A good consultant may be driven by a number of motivators and money is definitely going to be near the top. If a good consultant wants to leave their current company, it can often be because they are not taking home a big enough “slice of the pie” in their own eyes. Every recruitment manager has an opinion on what percentage of salary including commission a consultant should earn versus their billings. The problem many make though is to be too greedy and not implement a fair scheme that rewards a good recruitment consultant. Without going into too much detail, a good recruitment consultant should be taking home a much higher percentage of their billings than an average recruitment consultant. Be the best in class A company that is clearly going places and being talked about in the market is going to have the edge over a company that is lethargic in their approach and not cutting-edge. People talk and if you and your team are doing a great job, then good consultants will sit up and notice. It may even be the case that you have successfully recruited over the top of their business a couple of times. Have a great marketing strategy In any case, the way you present yourself to the market through your branding, advertising and marketing is critical. Think about how you can be different and set yourselves apart from the competition. Recruitment consultancies are becoming far more “marketing savvy” but there is still lots of scope for originality and creativity. Don’t be afraid to be different and when you hit upon a winning formula, continue to develop it. Create a referral scheme Finally, incentivise your consultants to engage with fellow recruiters through their contacts. This will be a far cheaper and usually a far more successful way of hiring than using rec to rec firms. Rec to recs also have a place, although I personally have never successfully hired through them. The key is to build up a relationship over time with your chosen firm and the more hires you make, the more you will have first “dibs” on the top consultants they meet. Good luck! First Steps When a Parent Starts Aging

First Steps When a Parent Starts Aging Age is a natural part of life. We all take first steps, and we all have difficulty taking those steps at the end of our lives. While age can be discouraging, and even saddening, it doesn’t have to be void of joy. If one of your parents is nearing the end of their life, they’ll start to experience some of the complications that come with old age. Steps will become dangerous territory. They’ll need regular checkups, and they may experience some of the health issues, like arthritis or failing hearing, that come with old age. You, as their child, will have a hard time watching them age, not only because they’re able to do less, but because a burden will start to fall on your shoulders. What your parents can’t do, you will try to do for them. The stress of caring for them can be a challenging time, but there are ways to make this season as joyful and fun as possible, despite its added complications. Start the Conversation When Mom or Dad gets older, they probably won’t be too happy about the fact. Age is something that happens “to somebody else,” and it can be psychologically difficult to realize it’s happening to you. As they look at more and more of their independence being taken away, they might get stubborn and even hostile regarding your attempts to help them. You don’t want to be fighting this uphill battle the day they move into a nursing home; start having these conversations early. Get Mom or Dad used to talking about home repairs, health issues, and small things they need help with. It will be less of a shock for both of you if you start the caretaking process early. Look at Finances To properly take care of one, or both, or your parents in their old age, you’ll need some money set aside for their long-term care. You may have the funds to do this, or your parents may have the funds, but either way, you’ll need to figure out how to provide for them. Look into cost-saving options like a reverse mortgage, or even check with an accounting and consulting firm to look at your parent’s financial figures. Make Things Easier Around the house, there are plenty of things that could cause extra trouble for your parents. Even just a three-step staircase into the bedroom could make their daily life more difficult, and ordinary things, like getting out of the shower, can cause serious injuries. To help your parents stay at home as long as possible, get their house ready for a different lifestyle. Move their bedroom onto the ground floor, and check out walk in tubs reviews to change their shower situation. The more little things as you can do to make life easier, the longer they’ll stay safe in their own house. You can hire a nurse to come in once a week until long-term care becomes necessary, and in the meantime, you can help around the house with minor repairs and shopping.

Twentysomething 7 reasons why my generation is more productive than yours

Twentysomething 7 reasons why my generation is more productive than yours This post is from Clay Collins, author of the blog The Growing Life. Generation Y is known for rolling into work late while wearing headphones, and dressing as if every day were casual Friday. Were often seen TXTing in our cubicles, taking breaks, and instant messaging. While these images dont exactly encourage others to view us as bastions of uber-productivity, were often a hell of a lot more productive than previous generations. Here are seven reasons why my generation (Generation Y) is often more productive than yours: Reason 1: We use the best tools Generation Y is more than comfortable doing the experimentation necessary to find the right tools and technologies for most effectively completing a task. We understand the companys project management software better than you do because we are comfortable playing with it. And we can probably recommend 2-3 other tools that would work better in the situation because were not afraid to rely on nearly-free, online productivity tools from unknown companies. Our to-do lists are carefully maintained, prioritized daily and synced with our PDAs and iPODs. Reason 2. Were good at automating Generation Y has grown up with technology and we believe that computers can do just about anything (or that they will someday). So when were receive a task, the first question we ask ourselves is: how can technology make this task go faster? Sometimes our efforts to employ technology make things more complicated, but quite often we end up successfully automating a repetitive task, saving ourselves and our companies thousands of dollars. Reason 3. We get better sleep Previous generations have lived by Ben Franklins aphorism: early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Generational Y intuitively knows what psychologists have confirmed: that a significant percentage of the population is much more productive when they go to bed late and get up late. Simply put, youre more productive when you follow your biologically determined circadian rhythms and get up when your body tells you to. Reason 4: Were much more likely to love our jobs Since Generation Y switches jobs much more frequently than previous generations, were much more likely to be doing things that (1) were good at, and (2) we actually like. All the job switching and repositioning we do means were much more likely to end up with professions that are actually suited to our passions and talents. And every productivity guru knows youre most productive when youre doing things you actually care about. Reason 5: We stay up to date in our fields Another upshot of changing jobs so frequently is the need to stay on top of the latest developments in our fields. Because job searching is a somewhat continual process for Generation Y, were likely to teach ourselves new skills, or pay for training, even if our employers dont because we want to stay competitive. We see training and skill-building as our own responsibility not something that our employer will necessarily do for us. And our lifestyle choices reflect a passion for constant learning and development . Reason 6: Were experimental Generation Y is continually doing research and development at the individual level. And because Generation Y cares more about getting new experiences and learning new skills than about not making mistakes , were willing to try new things, be creative, and take new angles. While this experimental approach might not result in quantifiable productivity, it leads to the kind of shifts in thinking that save time and money over the long haul. Reason 7: We dont go through the motions Weve seen our washed up parents work shit jobs they hate, and we wont go through the motions for the sake of job security. If youre an old-school boss, then this wont be comfortable. However, not going through the motions for the sake of going through the motions actually makes us more productive in the long run. Clay Collins is author of The Alternative Productivity Manifesto, and Quitting Things and Flakiness: The #1 Productivity Anti-Hack. Clay also writes about lifestyle design at Project Liberation.

Will Your Career Become Obsolete CareerMetis.com

Will Your Career Become Obsolete â€" CareerMetis.com Analysts at some of the world’s most prominent think tanks areforecasting massive disruptionsin the global job markets within the next several decades. They anticipate that technological advances will render 47 percent of the world’s current jobs obsolete. What Sorts of Jobs Are in Danger of Becoming Obsolete Soon?evalThese experts inform us that even the cornerstone societal job roles people historically considered stable and perpetually necessary -for example, teachers, accountants, lawyers, doctors, drivers and hospitality workers â€"are not safe from this massive disruption:eval? Online education broadens opportunities for teaching increasing numbers of students while requiring fewer instructors to lead classes in person.? Increasingly sophisticated accounting software systems are automating tasks that human accountants did in the past.? Fewer physicians will be needed as software purveyors release programs that can analyze biometric data more efficiently and diagnose disea se with far greater accuracy than any human doctor is able to.? Analysts predict that driverless cars will render most driving and transportation jobs obsolete within the next few decades.? The numbers of employed paralegals will decline dramatically as the research they do becomes increasingly automated.? Cashier jobs and retail sales jobs are in decline as internet shopping increases and retailers install growing numbers of automated self-checkout kiosks.? Telemarketing jobs are declining as robots begin to take over these tasks.eval? Banks need fewer tellers as people conduct more of their transactions online and at ATM machines.? Textile industry jobs are declining as automation replaces the technician jobs that used to be commonplace.? The hospitality industry is shifting; fewer hotels are needed, and fewer hotel staffers are being employed, now that homeowners are opening their spare rooms to paying guests through services like AirBnB.This type of technological disrupti on is nothing new; it started with the industrial revolution sometime around the year 1760, and it hasn’t slowed its pace since.evalWell before that, the rise of the printing press rendered the career path of professional scribe obsolete. Automated jacquard looms displaced numerous skilled hand weavers in the textile industry. The popularization of the automobile resulted in the displacement of numerous blacksmiths, since demand for horseshoes declined dramatically.Much later, the widespread adoption of computer systems forced typewriter manufacturers to scramble to re-invent their companies or go out of business. That particular new technology also sent large numbers of typists to the unemployment lines. What’s new: the startling rate of pace at which technological advancements, and their resulting disruptions to the global job market, are now occurring. So how do you plan for this massive upheaval that is beginning to occur and about to get exponentially more dramatic? For starter s, you will want to avoid investing your time and money in training for a career that isabout to become extinct. Additionally, you’ll want to start developing the skills that will be most valued by employers in the evolving global job market of the future. An article at The Economistenlightens us about two of the types of career paths that are least vulnerable to elimination by automation: creative careers and careers requiring managerial expertise. Development of critical thinking skills will be essential for survival in the future global economy that is now arising. An article from The Guardiansuggests that people with STEM This doesn’t automatically mean you need to plan for making a complete career change; but you can definitely do some thinking about whether a career change would be a wise move for you in the future.Training That Could Help You Succeed in the Global Job Market of the FutureA Master’s Degree in Robotics EngineeringAn obviously in-demand career choice in the future will be that of robotics engineer. Numerous creative and talented individuals will be needed to design, program, maintain and repair the army of artificial intelligence that will power the global economy.A Master’s Degree in Engineering ManagementIf you have a combination of technical engineering experience and hands-on management expertise, you’ll be armed with a winning combination of skills that’s likely to keep you in demand with employers in the future.Earning yourmaster’s degree in engineering managementcould help you to develop the necessary mindset of a manager and kickstart your management career.A Master’s Degree in Human Resources ManagementWe’re still a long ways away from developing robots that are capable of exhibiting the emotional intelligence required to perform a human resource manager’s job.evalThis job requires the ability to interpret nonverbal communications such as body language; these sorts of communications are still largely incomprehens ible to machines.A Ph.D. in Psychology, or a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) DegreeUnderstanding the finer points of human mental health is, so far, outside the scope of what robots are able to achieve; so for now, it could be a smart move to develop the skills and credentials necessary for becoming employed as a psychologist.A Master’s Degree or Professional Certifications in Information SecurityAs more computer systems, community infrastructure and home appliances become internet-of-things enabled, the need for information security professionals continues to grow. While machines may be utilized to do some of the necessary work in this field, human managers are increasingly in demand to oversee organizations’ information security operations. While it is impossible to foretell with certainty all the technological advances the future has in store, some of the imminent changes are predictable enough to enable you to prepare yourself for them adequately. We hope this information and th e accompanying suggestions are useful to you as you anticipate the direction your career could possibly take in the future.

The Mind Games of Job Search

The Mind Games of Job Search What job will make me most happy?   I had an interview, why arent they calling me back like they said they would?   I submitted my application, did they get it?   What if I take this contract job, will I miss out on a better opportunity?   I dont want to take a job making less than I used to make, Ill never re-gain my salary, will I? Whether it is the mind games others are playing with us or the mind games we play with ourselves, these can be the most challenging part of job search. There is so much uncertainty.   Not just about the future, but also about the process.   It is new to so many of us.   These are unchartered waters weve never had to navigate before. Are the things that frustrate and worry you within your control?   If you say you are worried about finding your next job, yes, you have accountability for this one.   If you are worried that there arent any jobs out there, now, that, is not within your control.   If you are frustrated by people who dont do what they say theyll do, welcome to the world.   It doesnt just happen in job search, does it?   Our feelings carry over into our words and actions.   Cease and desist all negative self talk and emotions, or please try. Do you feel like you are sometimes stuck in a rut? Unable to make decisions or move forward with ideas, or follow-up on suggestions? What is really going on?   What are you really afraid of?   What is the worst that could happen? Our life is not a straight road.   It may not go the way we planned.   There is no right answer.   There is a right for now answer. Think about what is holding you back or getting in your way.   Write these things down if you can.   Share them with a trusted friend. In speaking with a super talented counselor, he mentioned Career Anchors.   According to Dr. Schein, there are 8: Technical/Functional Competence General Management Competence Autonomy/Independence Security/Stability Entrepreneurial Creativity Service/Dedication to a Cause Pure Challenge Lifestyle It is the value we place on these that influence our career decisions and happiness.   For more reading, on the topic of these see this site.   Dr. Schein Career Anchors is available for a fee online.   He has also authored a book on Career Anchors.   It is just another way of understanding ourselves and what motivates us so we can move towards making the next decision.
