The Mind Games of Job Search
The Mind Games of Job Search What job will make me most happy? I had an interview, why arent they calling me back like they said they would? I submitted my application, did they get it? What if I take this contract job, will I miss out on a better opportunity? I dont want to take a job making less than I used to make, Ill never re-gain my salary, will I? Whether it is the mind games others are playing with us or the mind games we play with ourselves, these can be the most challenging part of job search. There is so much uncertainty. Not just about the future, but also about the process. It is new to so many of us. These are unchartered waters weve never had to navigate before. Are the things that frustrate and worry you within your control? If you say you are worried about finding your next job, yes, you have accountability for this one. If you are worried that there arent any jobs out there, now, that, is not within your control. If you are frustrated by people who dont do what they say theyll do, welcome to the world. It doesnt just happen in job search, does it? Our feelings carry over into our words and actions. Cease and desist all negative self talk and emotions, or please try. Do you feel like you are sometimes stuck in a rut? Unable to make decisions or move forward with ideas, or follow-up on suggestions? What is really going on? What are you really afraid of? What is the worst that could happen? Our life is not a straight road. It may not go the way we planned. There is no right answer. There is a right for now answer. Think about what is holding you back or getting in your way. Write these things down if you can. Share them with a trusted friend. In speaking with a super talented counselor, he mentioned Career Anchors. According to Dr. Schein, there are 8: Technical/Functional Competence General Management Competence Autonomy/Independence Security/Stability Entrepreneurial Creativity Service/Dedication to a Cause Pure Challenge Lifestyle It is the value we place on these that influence our career decisions and happiness. For more reading, on the topic of these see this site. Dr. Schein Career Anchors is available for a fee online. He has also authored a book on Career Anchors. It is just another way of understanding ourselves and what motivates us so we can move towards making the next decision.
